Bakersfield, California is located at the southern end of the great San Joaquin Valley. Located approximately 90 miles North of Los Angeles, 90 miles south of Fresno, and 90 miles East of the Pacific Ocean. The
community was founded in the mid-1800's by Colonel Thomas Baker, who would allow weary travelers and their animals to rest on his land. Therefore setting the example and paving the way for this community to be known for their great
hospitality. Bakersfield experienced tremendous growth from 1851 to 1869 after gold and oil were discovered. Early travelers stopped by Colonel Thomas Baker's alfalfa field and fed their animals when traveling through the
area. The travelers began calling it Baker's field. In 1869 Colonel Baker was appointed to survey the area as a formal township, since it was already known as Baker's field by most, it was named Bakersfield. |
