The Valley Staffer
1999, Second Quarter

PLEASE DON'T BLOCK US.
WE'RE TRYING TO CALL YOU!

For those of you using custom calling phone services, i.e. anonymous call rejection, caller ID, call screen etc., You may just be screening away your job opportunity.  If we can't contact you on the first try, we move on to someone else.

[ We're calling our temporary employees everyday! ]We have many potential candidates out there and if you don't answer the phone, you may just have to wait for the next opportunity!  The "Star 69" feature is not much help to you either.  By the time we get the call back, the position most likely has been filled.

In other words, use good judgment and don't let your phone services be the hang-up to getting the job you want!

TECHNIQUES FOR SAFE LIFTING
THE SAFE WAY TO LIFT

Before you lift anything, think about the load you'll be lifting.  Ask yourself: "Can I lift it alone?"  "Do I need mechanical help?"  "Is it to awkward for one person to handle, or should I ask a co-worker for help?"  If the load is manageable, follow these tips for safe lifting.

  1. Tuck your pelvis
By tightening your stomach muscles you can tuck your pelvis which will help your back stay in balance while you lift.
  2. Bend your knees
Bend at your knees instead of at your waist.  This helps you keep your center of balance and lets the strong muscles in your legs do the lifting.
  3. "Hug" the load
Try to hold the object you're lifting as close to your body as possible, as you gradually straighten your legs to a standing position.
  4. Avoid twisting
Twisting can overload your spine and lead to serious injury.  Make sure your feet, knees, and torso are pointed in the same direction when lifting.

PLAY IT SAFE AND
LIFT IT RIGHT

NOW HEAR THIS
PROTECT YOUR HEARING FOR LIFE
[ Protect Your Hearing! ]
Hearing loss can be so subtle that often we don't realize our impairment until it's too late.  Repeated exposure to too much noise can result in gradual hearing lose, but how much noise is too much?  Noise is measured in units call decibels or dBAs.  (A normal conversation is measured at approximately 60 dBAs.)   Excess noise is generally considered to be exposure to 85-90 dBAs or more over an 8-hour period.  Over time, excessive noise exposure can result in permanent hearing lose.

Protecting Your Hearing
On or off the job, you can protect your hearing by wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment recommended for your tasks.  Ear muffs, plugs, and canal caps can all reduce the amount of noise your ears are exposed to.  It also helps to know the decibel range or noise level of some common activities and situations to see if you may be exposing yourself to too much noise.  Remember that even loud vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, and home power tools can create excessive noise, so protect your hearing wherever you are.

How can I become a SAFETY EMPLOYEE?

Simple, just follow these guidelines,

  1. Cooperate and coordinate with management and other employees.
  2. Study and learn safe work practices.
  3. Report all unsafe work conditions.
  4. Always be attentive on the job.
